Preface

I was contacted by a visitor to the UK from the USA, asking if I could help locate a Ploughman’s Lunch. It was my patriotic duty to assist!

This is a personal account sent by email to me. The only editing to protect personal details or to give context from Previous emails.

Ploughman’s lunch served outdoors on a wooden table: plate with cheeses, salad, pickles, potato salad, bread, chutney and beetroot, with a glass of lager beside it.

The Review

Spot on with the cheeses. I’m not a huge Camembert fan, so I only nibbled a bit of that, but the Blue and the Cheddar were delicious. [I had previously written the following: Good, mature cheddar, is that Shropshire Blue in the middle, and the one closest – a Somerset Camembert? ]

The onions and gherkins were a bit sour for my tastes, but nice and crisp and fresh. I’m only familiar with Branston’s and it tasted as expected so I thought it was Branston’s, but yes, it was delicious.

Salad had a nice vinaigrette dressing, not too heavy handed.

The butter was nice and soft (and got softer as I sat in the lovely sunshine). The bread was the closest thing to a “disappointment” as I am pretty sure it was a partially-baked-then-frozen type, not freshly baked. But, the crust was just right, the crumb was tasty, and the baguettes were nicely warm.

The ambience of the pub was what one from the US (who remembers pubs from the late 70s to early 80s when we visited England when I was a girl, was what I envisioned, though there were only a few people there (it was early-ish on Thursday).

Just what the doctor ordered, as they say. Thank you for pointing me in that direction.

Cheers!

Peggy.
