Andrew of the Cheese Pantry, Ledbury.

The Harvest is Done.

📝 Two new reviews, and a reopening.

There are two new reviews, and one was a real gem. Head to the Reviews page for the full story, or dive straight in to the individual reviews of The Downgate Pub (Pictured below) Hungerford, West Berkshire, and The Butchers Arms Woolhope, Herefordshire.

Good news!
The Old Forge Farm Shop, Berwick St. James, Wiltshire has re-opened. It closed at rather short notice in August, but has since been revived by new owners, and all the feedback so far is positive.

The owners were delighted to be taken out of the archives and placed back in the hall of fame.

So, if your heading down the A303 past Stonehenge and fancy quality refreshments, you should drop in. Lets us know at Ploughman’s reviewed what you think.

A traditional Ploughman’s lunch served on a white plate, featuring crusty baguette slices, thick-cut ham, cheddar cheese, pickled onions, apple slices, grapes, celery, chutney, coleslaw, and a fresh salad with mixed leaves and sprouts. A pint of cider sits on the wooden pub table beside the plate.

🧀 A Holiday in Herefordshire, a tale of Cheese and Cider!

To my great shame I had not spent much time in Herefordshire. This has been remedied, and I feel all the better for it.

A wonderful part of the world. A rural delight of beautiful countryside, old farms, quaint villages, majestic views, and historic towns with bustling high streets.

Cider.

Hereford is as known for it’s orchards and cider as it is for Hereford Beef, and the White faced Red cattle that produce it.

So it was vital then that I visited Weston’s Cider Mill to see how they go about things there. Maybe more of a pilgrimage than educational in my case, but all in the group found it interesting.

September to Christmas is apple harvest, and with 700 Tonnes of apples arriving daily from the local area it was all go! Convoys of tractors and the largest HGV’s pyramidal with Herefords Finest Fruit.

Weston’s range of ciders are perfect (Pictured below) with a ploughman’s lunch and suit the many local cheeses of the area. (I’m not sponsored by them – but i’m open to offers!)
A bar counter displaying a selection of Westons ciders, including Old Rosie and several Henry Westons varieties, arranged in a line for tasting. Two small glasses with cider samples sit on the wooden bar beside the bottles, with people chatting nearby.

Cheese.

There is a pleasing amount of Cheese in Hereford and the surrounding areas. There are too many to list, so a quick visit to Monkland Cheese or Charles Martell will give you a good range. (I believe there are more – let me know, if you know).

I would also recommend visiting The Cheese Pantry in Ledbury. (Pictured Below).

Besides delicious cheeses at the front of the shop, there’s a range of pickles, preserves, jams and crackers in the back part of the shop. Go and have a look and say hello!

There are a great many other shops to visit, and quite a lot of old and beautiful building to look at. A stroll down the street will find a number of butchers, a bakery, a green grocer, a Vintner, plus a multitude of other shops, pubs and places of interest.A smiling man stands behind the counter of a cheese shop, with a glass display filled with a wide variety of British and continental cheeses. Boxes, olive oils, and tasting accessories are arranged on top of the counter, and framed cheese-themed posters decorate the wall behind him.

💷Sponsor Ploughman’s Reviewed!

Yes, this is an opportunity to raise your social profile, advertise your product, or just support the good work promoting local produce and good local cheeses.

I do not want to cover the site in advertising – so many sites now are becoming unusable with adverts darting about here and there. But is does cost money to run this site, and it would be nice to cover some of the cost.

Although, to be honest, if you make cheese, send me some, that would probably get your praises sung!
