Clavells restaurant, Kimmeridge

A wooden platter holds a classic Ploughman’s lunch with a variety of components. In the foreground, there is a crisp, fresh celery stick and a serving of creamy coleslaw. A few slices of rustic brown bread are placed alongside generous wedges of cheddar cheese and ham. To the left, sliced apple adds a fresh touch, and next to it, there’s a small bowl of dark chutney. The salad includes mixed greens, thinly sliced red onions, yellow and red bell peppers, and cucumber. On top of the salad sits a grilled sausage. The background features a cup of tea, a jar of sugar cubes, and a slice of sponge cake with a layer of frosting, all sitting on a dark wooden table. A rustic wooden table number "23" is displayed, indicating the table setting in an outdoor or café environment.

Date of Visit – 18/08/2014
At the time of the visit, it was called Kimmeridge Tea Rooms

The Food

8 – Pickled Onion. Onion is very good, but not a shallot……

10 – Pickle. Amazing!

9 – Cheese / Ham. Very good quality, locally sourced ham. cheese good. Very, very good, but could have been more generous (although, it may be quite enough for many people’s tastes)

9 – Bread. The bread was very, nice too. Rustic, full of flavour, had body but wasn’t tough. Perfect.  Could have been a nudge more bread – but hey, perhaps I’m just a tad greedy and hard to please.

4 – Spread (better be butter or a choice).  Packet butter (not local), but quite nice and at a good, spreadable temperature.

5 – Presentation. Outstanding!

5 – Salad, etc. Once again, outstanding.  Flavoursome & fresh with a nice dressing.

5 – Originality.  Home-made coleslaw, and a Sausage.  Although the addition of a hot sausage was a bit random, I like the jollity of it.

Food Total: 55

Beverages

9 – Tea.  Good flavour, extra water on request, plenty of milk, and all things poured correctly.  How tea should be!

Drinks Total: 9

The venue

8 -Service. Table service (order at counter) so sorry to drop a couple of points for not ordering at the table.  However, the service was faultless and speedy.

9 – Atmosphere. Amazing – inside or out.

5 – Location. One of the most picturesque locations imaginable.

3 – Toilets. The Toilets let the place down a bit, but they are clean and functional (always got bog roll) and it is a rural location.  Would be a 4 if there was an engaged indicator (big bolt on inside of the door).

Venue total: 25

Clavell Kimmeridge Ploughman’s

Editors Note. This visit was now a while ago when it was the Kimmeridge Tea Rooms and Farm Shop. There is still Ploughman’s on the menu, and I suspect that it is as good if not better now.
