The Golden Swan, Wilcot.

A wooden platter showcases a classic Ploughman’s lunch on an outdoor table. The meal features thick slices of ham, cheddar, and brie, accompanied by fresh salad greens, cucumber, tomatoes, and raw onion rings. On the side, there's a generous portion of fresh bread rolls, butter, chutney, and pickled onions. A few chunky chips are placed alongside the bread. The background reveals a pint of cider on the table and warm evening sunlight casts a golden glow, adding to the rustic, countryside feel.

The Food

— Continue to end for update. —

7 – Pickled Onion. There was no pickled onion! However, there was chutney, pickle, and fresh onion, which was nice – so 6 points, as this is better than most of the pickled onions served…..

9 – Pickle. This was amazing. Local, and just delicious.

10 – Cheese / Ham. Stunning home-cooked ham, tasty cheddar and brie – and loads of it too!

10 – Bread. Fresh from the local bakery, Marshalls in Pewsey. Some of the best bread ever!

4 – Spread. (better be butter or a choice). Packet butter. Nice and soft too.

5 – Presentation. It was nicely presented, and very original too.

4 – Salad, etc.  The salad was nice and fresh.

5 – Originality. Wooden plate. nicely laid out – and includes a few chips. Genius.

The venue

10 – Service.  Order at the bar.  Served promptly.  Service friendly and efficient.

8  – Atmosphere. A fantastic little country pub. A great mix of locals and tourists. The grounds to the pub are stunning and many people outside.

5 – Location. Chocolate box location.

3 – Toilets. Clean, functional, but a little tired.  More than acceptable, though.

Update

I have been again, and it was even better!

Date of Visit – 31/05/2021

A circular slate platter holds a traditional Ploughman’s lunch arranged beautifully. On the left, several thick slices of fresh bread are served with butter pats. In the center, a small mound of pickled onions, rings of red onion, and a fresh salad of lettuce, cucumber, and tomato add color. The cheese selection includes cheddar, brie, and a wedge of another hard cheese, topped with a crispy onion ring. To the right, there's a creamy coleslaw and a small pot of chutney. The presentation gives a rustic feel, set against a wooden picnic table backdrop.

The Food revisited

There is no point going through everything here, as it was amazing. So, the changes.

9 – Pickled Onion. They were very good, and all the previous comments are extant.

10 – Cheese / Ham. There was no ham this time, as you now have to choose between cheese or ham. This I think unfair as the Ham is the best (I highly recommend the Ham dishes, especially the Ham, Egg, and Chips – delicious). There was mould cheese. Some people like this – I do not. My wife assisted and assured me it was delicious. I would have preferred more cheddar, but there we go.

10 – Bread. No change here – just wanted to mention it. The picture does not do it justice! it is the best bread you will ever taste, it’s from Marshals Bakery. Seriously, get some – here are a few places that sell Marshals Bread, go and get some. Perhaps I should ask the to sponsor this website…….

5 – Originality. Slate plate this time. nicely laid out – and includes an onion ring instead of chips. Absolutely nothing to do with a ploughman’s lunch, but I liked it.

Not a big change to the score, but ina crowded market, every point counts!
